How Student Finance Wales works

Wales splits living-cost support into two parts:

  • Welsh Government Learning Grant – free money you don’t repay. Everyone gets at least £1,020. The full grant goes to households with income of £18,370 or less.
  • Maintenance Loan – the rest of your total. It is repaid like any student loan.

Between £18,370 and £59,200 the grant tapers down evenly and the loan rises by the same amount, so your total never changes.

Why it matters

Two Welsh students living away from home both get £12,590. One from a household earning £18,000 borrows only £4,330; one from a household earning £60,000 borrows £11,570. The first will have far less to repay later.

Frequently asked questions

Do all Welsh students get a grant?
Yes. Every eligible full-time Welsh undergraduate gets at least £1,020 of Welsh Government Learning Grant, whatever their household income.
Does household income change my total in Wales?
No. Your total support is fixed by where you live. Household income only changes the split between grant and loan.
What is the maximum Welsh Government Learning Grant?
In 2026/27 it is £7,020 living with parents, £8,260 away from home outside London and £10,325 in London, for household income of £18,370 or less.
